MAGNUM Continue Work On New Album Due Out In January


Long-running UK rockers MAGNUM have been back in the studio working on their new album, Escape From The Shadow Garden, for a few months now.



According to a studio update, "all the bass tracks and drums by Al Barrow and Harry James have been completed now. Guitarist Tony Clarkin is still writing lyrics for the album and awaiting Bob Catley's return to finish the vocals. We're expecting Mark Stanway in for keyboards over the next few days. Once again the artwork will be straight from the illustrative mind of Rodney Matthews. Rodney and Tony have come up with some great concepts for the new artwork."

Escape From The Shadow Garden will be released in January via SPV Records, followed in March by a European tour.

MAGNUM Issue Update From The Studio


Influential British melodic hard rock group MAGNUM recently confirmed the release in 2014 of their upcoming nineteenth studio album, Escape From The Shadow Garden, via Steamhammer / SPV on March 19th in Scandinavia, March 21st in Germany, March 24th in Europe and March 25th in North America.

An update from Magnum states: "OK so we have been locked away at M2 studio working on what we think is one hell of an album. We literally have just finished mixing the tracks and they are sounding fantastic, even if we say so ourselves."

Bassist Al Barrow says, "I have just spent the last few hours listening to the album and it has to be one of the most powerful albums I have had the pleasure of being part of. Every track has a killer chorus and the production is just top notch. I got goosebumps! Everyone has put so much of themselves into this album. The tracks have everything I think a Magnum fan will ever want to hear. Energy, power and passion. The lyrics take you to all sorts of places painting images as the music pushes along with so much force."

Guitarist Tony Clarkin says, "I had a feeling of freedom when coming to write the lyrics for this album and I am very happy with how it has turned out."

Bob Catley (vocals): " I can't wait for everyone to hear this, it's going to blow them away. I say it with every album, this is our best, but I really have to say it again, this not just the best - it's beyond that!"

A band statement continues: "So all that needs to be done now is wait for March to roll around. We wished it was sooner, and we can't wait to get out on the road to play some of these new tracks and some classic Magnum songs for you all. We're very excited to be sharing the stage with SAGA on the German/Swiss part of the 2014 tour. By now you will have seen the new artwork. Once again Rodney has gone beyond the call with this cover. We can't wait for you all to see the full double gatefold version. Already we have seen so much positive feedback about artwork and photos so far. Everything about this new album is a step up and the we believe we have taken it to another level. We know you're going to love this new album."

Escape From The Shadow Garden will be available as a limited digipak edition with bonus material, as a double coloured vinyl LP, standard jewel case CD and download. The cover is once again created by famous fantasy artist Rodney Matthews (Asia, Nazareth, Eloy).


Escape From The Shadow Garden follows the success of On The 13th Day, which charted at #28 in Germany, #36 in Sweden, #43 in the UK national album charts, #57 in Switzerland, and at #3 in the UK rock charts and #5 in the UK Indie Charts at the beginning of October 2012.

Three weeks after the release of ‘Escape From The Shadow Garden, Magnum set off on a huge European Tour.

Magnum mastermind Tony Clarkin’s regained joy in his band is omnipresent on the latest Magnum offering, Escape From The Shadow Garden. Just like his simple yet logical work ethos: “I simply told myself: you’re a passable guitarist, so you should play the guitar. As the band’s guitarist and producer, I have all the freedom I need to create exactly what I feel like creating.” The result of his latest burst of creativity consists of eleven wonderfully melodic rock songs which blend all the typical Magnum ingredients, sounding in a fascinating way both timeless and classic. “This band has certain unmistakable trademarks,” Clarkin explains. “Among them are my feel for melodies and Bob’s unique vocal style."

Only a month after the release of its predecessor, On The 13th Day, Clarkin started with the preparations for Escape From The Shadow Garden – as always an exciting phase in his life. “Before you haven’t recorded and mixed every single note, you never really know whether you’ll be happy with the result. When I heard the final version of the eleven new songs with their different stories and diverse arrangements, I knew it had turned into an impressive and complete album. Together with the great cover artwork designed by Rodney Matthews (Asia, Nazareth, Eloy), this is a release which forges an arch to the early days of Magnum’s career. And that’s wonderful! I was really happy when my friend Jimmy Lea of Slade came to visit me at the studio again and said: ‘You’ve done it again?’ It doesn’t matter whether by sheer luck or hard work – life could have gone a totally differently way.”
