AVANTASIA - Tobias Sammet "Extraordinarily Happy" About New Album

Tobias Sammet and EDGUY are currently touring South America with
ex-GUNS N' ROSES guitarist SLASH and his band, but right before they
left Tobias issued some footage he filmed during the recording of the
new AVANTASIA album to give you a clue of what's going on in the studio.
The drum recordings for the forthcoming Avantasia album have been
completed, the drummer is Russell Gilbrook from URIAH HEEP.

NEW AVANTASIA ALBUM - STUDIO REPORT

Tobias comments: "Russell is a killer drummer, a real power house!
When Eric Singer gave me his schedule for 2012 and how much he'd be
involved with KISS, I knew that I had to find a drummer, so I was trying
to kind of make a virtue of necessity and add a new flavor to
Avantasia. I remembered having seen Uriah Heep a few years ago and I was
really impressed by the way the drummer mistreated his poor little kit,
beating it to pieces like a monster, while still keeping the dynamics
and the groove. I knew that if I‘d be in need of a drummer one day, I'd
try to work with this guy. And now after the recording has been
completed I know that it's been a very good decision. If you check the
little clip above, I know you will agree. Russell is a monster and the
drums sound amazing. Also the studio must have the best drum recording
room I've ever been to. Previous clients like ROGER WHITTAKER, TRUCK
STOP, RAMMSTEIN,
and SARAH BRIGHTMAN knew why they went for the
Vox-Klangstudio... I am extraordinarily happy!"

AYREON's Arjen Lucassen To Guest On New AVANTASIA Album

AVANTASIA mastermind Tobias Sammet (EDGUY) has checked in with the following update:

"To me he used to be what John D. Rockerduck is to Scrooge McDuck:
An adamant long time rival; in our case when it comes to producing Rock
Operas. Well, if you can't beat your enemy make him your ally! And so I
opened the door and literally invited pestilence into my world, ha!
Seriously, the truth is that the 'pestilence' I'm talking about is
really one of the nicest, coolest and loveliest plagues I've ever come
to know, an ambitious artist through and through and a real great guitar
player. So, having just come back from a shopping tour in 2912 - where
apparently he found himself a brand new pair of bad-ass pants &
boots - he went into the studio to record some additional lead guitar
for the forthcoming Avantasia album, The Mystery Of Time: Ayreon
mastermind Arjen Anthony Lucassen!

Arjen, if you read this: Killer pants, hope you had a Merry
Christmas and I wish you a happy 200110010013! ;-) You rock! Groetjes,
Tobi"

In March 2013 the new Avantasia Rock Opera, The Mystery Of Time,
will be released on CD and vinyl. The album is going to feature guest
stars such as: Biff Byford (SAXON), Michael Kiske (UNISONIC,
ex-HELLOWEEN), Bruce Kulick (ex-KISS, ex-MEAT LOAF), Russell Gilbrook
(URIAH HEEP), Arjen A. Lucassen (AYREON, ex-VENGEANCE) and the German
Film Orchestra Babelsberg. More musicians will be announced soon! In
April an all-star ensemble will set off on a world tour, playing 3-hour
indoor shows on their own plus a few chosen festivals!

Concerts in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile have just been added to
Avantasia's tour schedule, their complete routing is available at this location.

PRETTY MAIDS Vocalist Ronnie Atkins To Guest On New AVANTASIA Album

EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet's all-star project, AVANTASIA will release
their new Rock Opera, The Mystery Of Time, on CD and vinyl in March.

The band has now announced the addition of PRETTY MAIDS vocalist
Ronnie Atkins

perform vocals on one of the tracks.

Frontman Tobias Sammet commented: "I have been a huge Pretty Maids
fan since I was a teenager. I already asked Ronnie to be on the Metal
Opera in 1999, but he was busy back then. Last year I saw Pretty Maids
live, and they were a steam train on stage, unbelievable. After the show
we met and Ronnie was a great guy. Finally after 13 years, I am really
proud to have him on the new Avantasia album. And his kick-ass
performance leaves no doubt: It was a great decision to ask him!"

Atkins joins a big list of guest stars such as: Arjen Lucassen

AVANTASIA - Exclusive BW&BK Overview Of The Mystery Of Time Listening Session Available; Release Date Confirmed

EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet's all-star project, AVANTASIA will release
their new rock opera, The Mystery Of Time, on March 30th via Nuclear
Blast.

BW&BK scribe Carl Begai attended a listening session at Nuclear
Blast headquarters on January 19th in Donzdorf, Germany and has checked
in with the following first impressions of the album:

"Folks have said Sammet and guitarist/producer Sascha Paeth lost the
plot last time out in 2010 by releasing a 22 song double album that
pounded the listener into submission with too much information. The
Mystery Of Time
sees the dynamic duo taking a step back and focusing on
crafting a "simple" no-nonsense rock opera; 10 songs, two of 'em
ballads, two of them hitting the 10+ minute mark, and
influences/inspiration worn shamelessly on the Avantasia sleeve. Of all
their releases thus far, the new record is by far the most theatrical, a
point driven home by opening track 'Spectres', the epic 'Savior In The
Clockwork', and the closing MEAT LOAF-esque 'The Great Mystery'. The use
of a flesh and blood orchestra really DOES make a difference against
dial-up digital magic, made all the more special because the boys didn't
use it on every single track (which is usually the downfall of
productions like this).

Plenty of heavy over-the-top metal moments from Paeth's treasure
trove of riffs, to guitar leads from Bruce Kulick (ex-KISS) on three
tracks, and Arjen Lucassen (AYREON) trading licks with keyboardist Ferdy
Doernberg
(ROUGH SILK) on 'The Watchmaker's Dream'. Michael Kiske
(UNISONIC, ex-HELLOWEEN) blows the doors off with his circa '87
performance on 'Where Clock Hands Freeze' (speedy and heavy), but the
big prize goes to 'Invoke The Machine' for it's blatant tip of the hat
to cult fave Danish bashers PRETTY MAIDS featuring PM vocalist Ronnie
Atkins in a duet with Tobi. Several journalists at the session agreed
the song is the high point of the record.

Having Biff Byford (SAXON), Eric Martin (MR. BIG) and Joe Lynn
Turner
(ex-RAINBOW) on board... jobs well done all around but nothing
mindblowing. Instantly recognizable voices, sure, but of the three only
Byford really stands out thanks to being placed outside his Wheels Of
Steel comfort zone.

Tagging Martin to sing a ballad? Meh. Too easy, and probably the only real disappointment to be had.

As for Master Of Ceremonies Sammet, he's his expected
high-on-adrenaline self, easily outpacing and outperforming the latest
Edguy record (Age Of The Joker), definitely crushing The Wicked Symphony
/ Angel Of Babylon albums on all fronts."

Watch for our exclusive interview with Sammet, coming soon.

The Mystery Of Time marks a conceptual story again, and the tracklist is as follows:

'Spectres'

'The Watchmakers' Dream'

AVANTASIA - The Mystery Of Time Album Artwork Revealed

EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet's all-star project, AVANTASIA will release
their new rock opera, The Mystery Of Time, on March 30th via Nuclear
Blast. The cover artwork for The Mystery Of Time, hand-painted by world
famous British fantasy painter Rodney Matthews, can be seen below:

About the artwork, Tobias states: “It is a great honour for me to
have Rodney create the artwork of The Mystery Of Time. Since the new
album is a conceptual album and its story has a magical and enchanting
atmosphere, there was no other painter I could think of to create the
artwork. I've had several creative conversations with Rodney during the
process and I had the feeling that the concept was inspiring to him
right from the start. I put a lot of energy into producing a very
detailed and fascinating album, and Rodney had that same enthusiasm to
create an artwork just as detailed and fascinating. This is a new
chapter in Avantasia's history and I think it didn't deserve less than a
magical painting by my favorite painter and childhood hero: The one and
only Rodney Matthews!“

The Mystery Of Time
tracklist is as follows:

'Spectres'

'The Watchmakers' Dream'

(MR. BIG), Ronnie Atkins (PRETTY MAIDS), Bruce Kulick (ex-KISS), Arjen

AVANTASIA Listening Session - "Got The Time?"

Special report by Carl Begai

I'm going to start this story with an apology to Tobias Sammet and all those involved with the AVANTASIA machine.

In my initial overview of the new album The Mystery Of Time (found here),
I did a fair job of smack-talking Sammet's previous Avantasia effort,
The Wicked Symphony / Angel Of Babylon double album. In my world it was
just too damn long, with only three songs of a possible 22 having left a
mark on my brain since the 2010 release ('Scales Of Justice',
'Stargazers' and 'Death Is Just A Feeling' in case anyone cares). In
stark contrast The Mystery Of Time boasts only 10 songs, and after only
one time through during the listening session at the Nuclear Blast
offices in Donzdorf, Germany there were melodies and riffs still
resonating in my head days later. I blame my harsh view of The Wicked
Symphony / Angel Of Babylon on being smacked with too much information
at one time, while The Mystery Of Time is an exciting "buckle up" ride
if you're a fan of the genre. It seems my enthusiasm may have gotten the
better of me. I still say Avantasia's previous outing pales in
comparison to the new album, but by no means had I intended to dumb down
Sammet's vision or the work that went into making it a reality.

That said, during the listening session for The Mystery Of Time, I
did mention to Sammet that I thought The Wicked Symphony / Angel Of
Babylon was too big for its own good.

"Definitely, I agree," says Sammet. "Not that I would throw away any
of the material because I like all the songs, but some of the songs
suffered from being just one out of 22 songs that came out at the same
time. The songs that would have been really appreciated on an album of
10 tracks were called 'weak' or 'fillers' because there was so much
competition. That was something that I wasn't able to predict. I
thought, 'I wrote the material, I like each song because I had months to
become acquainted with them.' I knew every detail of every song, so
they were very important to me."

The Mystery Of Time offers so much more to sink one's teeth into
because of its compact nature. Short-ish, sweet, wonderfully diverse,
and straight to the point.

"I'm really with you on that," Sammet agrees. "This album is an entity all its own, and compact is the best way to describe it."

In expected Avantasia form, The Mystery Of Time is another rock
opera loaded with guest vocalists and musicians. Along with some
noteworthy guest appearances - SAXON singer Biff Byford, ex-RAINBOW
frontman Joe Lynn Turner, and AYREON mastermind Arjen Lucassen being the
big surprises - Sammet opted to use a real orchestra on some of the
tracks rather than faking it with fancy software.

"That wasn't really planned from the beginning," says Sammet. "When I
wrote 'Black Orchid' (featuring Byford) - I think it was the third or
fourth song to be done - and the songwriting was actually finished, I
decided that it needed a real orchestra. I know it's hard to tell the
difference between a real orchestra and a programmed orchestra these
days, especially if Miro (Michael Rodenberg) does the keyboards, but it
was really important to me. All of a sudden the album sounded completely
different to me when the orchestra was added. I think it gave an added
dimension to the sound. Sascha (Paeth/guitarist, producer) said that we
didn't have to use one because nobody would be able to tell the
difference, but after it was recorded he agreed that the orchestra gave
the album a really different sound. What they play is exactly what Miro
had programmed. It's just that, truly, only the sound picture changed.
The attack is different compared to the programmed orchestra, the
resonance of the instruments is very different. You can't program that
sort of thing and get the same results."

As a rock opera, The Mystery Of Time earns its stripes right out of
the gate with 'Spectres' (featuring Joe Lynn Turner). It's very easy to
imagine the song as a theatre piece, essentially welcoming people to the
show and setting the stage for everything that follows.

"I would love to say that I was thinking that way, in terms of
theatre, but to be honest, no, it didn't enter my mind. I wrote
'Spectres' and I just knew it should be the opening track; I never said
'Now I'm going to write the opening track.' I just thought 'This is the
way an album should start.'"

And if we follow this theatre thread, 'The Great Mystery' (featuring
Byford, Turner and MAGNUM's Bob Catley) is the right amount of
over-the-top MEAT LOAF-flavoured bombast to close the album...

"That's definitely on purpose," says Sammet. "It's a funny thing
because Amanda (Somerville/vocals) and everybody were doing the choirs
and we sing 'End of chapter one..! One!' at the end of the song. It was
so Monty Python that we laughed ourselves to death."

The Mystery Of Time sees the return of ex-HELLOWEEN singer Michael
Kiske
('Where Clock Hands Freeze', 'Dweller In A Dream'), who has been a
part of the Avantasia roster since The Metal Opera release in 2001.
Sammet can take equal credit with GAMMA RAY frontman Kai Hansen for
continually bringing Kiske back to the realms of metal even though he
was quite vocal upon leaving Helloween in 1993 about just how much he
disliked the personalities and associated baggage within the metal
scene.

"The fan in me was thanking the manager in me for bringing Kiske
in," Sammet laughs. "When I was on stage singing with him on the last
Avantasia tour, I was just a witness to just how great a singer he truly
is. He's a cool guy, we're good friends, and I'm happy that he's so
happy right now. He's found peace with the scene, I think, and he
understands that not everything about metal is satanic and bad. Michael
still dislikes the satanic aspects of the scene, but I think he was
taken by how warm the welcome was when he came out on tour."

Ultimately, it's the fanboy in Sammet that fuels Avantasia. Take
'Invoke The Machine'
as one of several examples, perhaps the greatest
PRETTY MAIDS
song the Danish legends never wrote. Done up as a tip of
the hat to the band's biggest hit 'Future World' - by accident or
design, who knows? - the song features Pretty Maids singer Ronnie Atkins
trading vocals with Sammet.

"I brought Ronnie in because I wanted to have him 13 years ago
(laughs). I wanted to have him on the first Avantasia album and he
didn't want to do it. Back then it was much more difficult for me
because I didn't know as many people as I know now, but I worked really
hard to get his phone number and I called him. He was 'Well, no, I don't
think so...' and of course that was his reaction because I was just
some guy calling out of the blue asking to have him sing on an album for
a band he'd never heard of. When I met him in 2012 on the 70000 Tons Of
Metal cruise, we talked for two hours and he was so nice. I called his
management after that and asked about Ronnie doing the song, and he was
totally into it."

Perhaps less of a wishlist item and more of a middle finger to those
that stirred the pot with talk of a mean-spirited rivalry, Sammet also
invited fellow rock opera mastermind, Ayreon creator Arjen Lucassen, to
perform on 'The Watchmaker's Dream'... but not as the guest vocalist so
many fans are expecting to hear. Nope, Lucassen breaks out his guitar to
trade licks with veteran keyboardist Ferdy Doernberg (ROUGH SILK). This
is the second collaboration between Sammet and Lucassen, albeit done
long distance rather than in the studio.

"This time it wasn't even a phone call; it was just emails back and
forth," Sammet reveals. "We've spoken on the phone a couple times and
Arjen's a really great guy. This rivalry thing wasn't actually a true
rivalry at the beginning, but when we released our albums at around the
same time we were asked about each other all the time in every
interview. It was getting annoying because I wanted to promote my own
album and they were asking me about my worst competitor (laughs). I was
so happy with his guitar solo. I got back to him and said I thought it
was amazing, and then I started wondering if he thought I was taking the
piss because I was overdoing it, but I was truly amazed by what he'd
done."

Sammet also brought in former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick play leads
on the anthem 'Black Orchid' and the albums two 10+ minute epics,
'Savior In The Clockwork' and 'The Great Mystery'.

"Those licks are totally Bruce, and then we had this Meat Loaf-ish
song ('The Great Mystery'), and I had the chance to tap the lead guitar
player on the Bat Out Of Hell tour. We've known each other for some
time, so I was able to say 'Can you do this?' or 'Can you try that?' or
he would tell me he's going to put some harmonies in one place or
screaming guitars somewhere else. It's a friendship, so I knew what to
expect and after he listened to the material we could discuss it
easily."

"That's basically the case with every musician that you work with,"
Sammet adds. "You have to have confidence that there is a theoretical
chance you'll like what you get back because otherwise it wouldn't make
sense to ask them (laughs). If there's a bigger chance that you'll like
it rather than hate it, you're on the right path."

The Mystery Of Time tracklist is as follows:

'Spectres'

'The Watchmakers' Dream'

'Black Orchid'

'Where Clock Hands Freeze'

'Sleepwalking'

'Savior In The Clockwork'

'Invoke The Machine'

'What's Left Of Me'

'Dweller In A Dream'

'The Great Mystery'

AVANTASIA's Tobias Sammet Talks To The Michael Kiske Fanclub

The Michael Kiske Fanclub conducted an interview with Tobias Sammet
(AVANTASIA, EDGUY) about the new Avantasia album, The Mystery Of Time,
the live tour as well as some other topics related to Michael Kiske
(ex-HELLOWEEN). Here are a few excerpts from the chat:

Michael Kiske Fanclub: Can we maybe expect another Avantasia album in some years?

Sammet: "There will have to be the end of the story of The Mystery
Of Time.
It needs to have a part two and I will certainly ask Michael
again. We have a true friendship going on and I did not want to have him
record stuff and then save it and then release it secretly in three
years. By the time I will write the second chapter of The Mystery of
Time I will talk to Michael and we’ll do something completely fresh if
he feels like he wants to do it."

Michael Kiske
Fanclub: You were together with UNISONIC at Masters of
Rock Festival 2012. Did you like the live sound of the band? And do you
like the album?

Sammet: "I watched the whole show from the side of the stage and I
felt proud for Michael and Kai and I really enjoyed the show. I mean,
let's face it: Michi still has it and I was able to witness that from
the side of stage. I caught 'March Of Time' and 'Future World' and I
think 'I Want Out'….I really loved to hear those songs sung by Michael
but also the new material sounded great. 'Unisonic' and 'I've Tried',
great songs that really work well with Michael's voice. I am not too
familiar with all of the songs, but I also remember 'Souls Alive', cool
song too."

Michael Kiske Fanclub: The journalist Carl Begai (BraveWords) commented (here)
that some vocalists in Avantasia new album are placed in a “comfort
zone”, he meant that when a vocalist sings that track usually it is of
his typical style, Eric Martin singing Mr. BIG-type, Bob Catley singing
MAGNUM-type, Kiske singing ‘Eagle Fly Free’-type, etc… Do you think this
is the best way to make those vocalists shine or you just want them
feeling comfortable?

Sammet: "I don’t think about that at all. Carl also said that Biff
Byford
(SAXON) was shining because he was pushed out of his comfort
zone. I’d never do that on purpose. Who am I to try to push Biff out of
his comfort zone? He is more than six feet tall… I write songs and think
about who would be best to sing them.... But I never think about
comfort zones. It’s natural to have the vocalists do the kinds of vocals
they are known for. Michael sings like Michael. I would never want him
to sing a thrash metal song."

Michael Kiske Fanclub: There are some trailers from Frontiers
Records about 'A New Metal Opera’. Kiske, Sharon, Rob Rock and some
others participate there as well. What do you think about this project?

Sammet: "Wow, someone is extraordinarily creative here: the title,
the guests, the timing… What a funny coincidence, isn't it?! But there
have been thousands of Metal Operas, especially after Avantasia. Such is
business…"

AVANTASIA - The Mystery Of Time Hits The German Charts At #2!

AVANTASIA's album, The Mystery Of Time, continues to storm the charts
around the world, selling twice as many copies as previous albums,
including rocketing straight to #2 of the official German Media Control
album charts.

Leader Tobias Sammet has issued the following statement:

"To all fans, thank you all for your support! A lot of amazing
musicians have worked their asses off to make The Mystery Of Time a
timeless piece of art. Is it heavy metal? Is it classic hard rock? Is it
epic metal? Is it rock? The answer to all of those questions is 'yes,
it is!' It is all of that. I'd call it a piece of music that I put
together being nothing but a fanboy myself! It reflects my personal
taste, nothing else! I am really proud and thankful. And I also wanna
thank everybody who've helped me put it together. Now we are getting
ready for the tour and Jesus Christ, this show will be massive! Tomorrow
I am gonna meet the rest of the guys to rehearse and bring the Metal
Opera on the road again! Playing three hours might be a challenge, but
we have to cover six albums, so it would be even more of a challenge to
just play two hours and pick the right songs. What I can say?! We'll
play a lot of the Metal Opera 1 & 2 and pretty much all of the new
album… Plus the highlights of The Scarecrow, The Wicked Symphony and
Angel Of Babylon. A lot of people kept asking if we do the whole show in
all countries, I have to admit: We can't do the full three hours at the
festivals, we can't play a 15 minute track at festivals! Impossible!
So, it will be 90 minutes at festivals only, but we give our best
nevertheless… Thank you all for your support and see you on the road!"

Updated chart positions include:

Germany - #2

Sweden - #9

Finland - #9

Norway - #19

England - #6 rock, #97 international

France - #51

Netherlands - #85

Japan - #17 international

Avantasia is currently rehearsing for their enormous three-hour set
on the Mystery World Tour; their complete live itinerary can be accessed
