AOR HEAVEN CLASSIX OUTSIDE EDGE DOUBLE HEADER:

Outside Edge are clearly one of the
bands that fate should've been a good deal kinder to, for despite
releasing two albums on major labels in a period (the mid-80s) when
melodic rock was surely at its peak, the British group just seemed to be
overlooked certainly at home despite some pretty high profile
support slots to the likes of Bryan Adams and Manfred Mann's Earth Band
showing on their CV. Interestingly, whilst the group had been met with
little more than a cursory nod in the UK, they were at least better
known in European circles, where the group's product is highly revered
and previous CD releases have been commanding quite hefty premiums.
The self-titled Outside Edge album had been
released in France after the trio had impressed label executives at WEA
having spent time in the country gigging in the early 80s in the post
Liner guise of Spoilers, a Police influenced new wave outfit (who
released two singles through the same label in 1980). The musical
experiment that was Spoilers had eventually led to the three musicians
finding a more natural groove and that was a decision that had looked to
have paid dividends when WEA France excitedly offered an album deal.
The release of the record, although criminally ignored back in the UK,
nonetheless paved the way for the band now bolstered in number with
the addition of keyboard player Peter Giles to gain the support slot
on Bryan Adams' 1985 UK tour and a subsequent deal with 10 Records.
The first fruits of the new relationship with 10 (who also had Manowar,
Warrior and Gary Moore on the roster) came in the tasty form of 'Running Hot'
(now also reissued as part of the AOR Heaven Classix series). Produced
by Terry Manning (ZZ Top/Joe Cocker/Molly Hatchet) and released in 1986,
the group subsequently toured in support of the album throughout Europe
opening for Manfred Mann's Earth Band; also gaining a spot at the
Reading Festival in August of that year.
Bizarrely, after the label had been championing the forthcoming new
album ("More Edge") in the press, it's release was suddenly shelved
after the 10 Records operation was decamped to Los Angeles and it became
evident that the, as yet untitled, new record would not be getting a US
release after all. Or a release at all, as it transpired. One may ask
why the mother label, Virgin, failed to pick the record up for release
at the time?
"More Edge" as it was called later on got released for the first time through Virgin Sweden in the year 2000.
The AOR Heaven Classix releases has been as usually digitally
remastered by Chris Lyne (Soul Doctor) with additional liner notes from
Dave Reynolds. Both CDs are now available through www.aorheaven.com and selected retailers.
